Exterior and Interior Deadbolt Installation Done Right
A deadbolt installation is not one-size-fits-all. Exterior doors — the front entry, back door, and garage access door — demand a heavy-duty single or double-cylinder deadbolt with a reinforced strike plate and at least 3-inch screws that anchor into the door frame stud, not just the trim. Interior deadbolts, used on home offices, master bedrooms, or basement entries, are typically lighter and may not require a key cylinder on the outer side. Our technicians evaluate the door thickness, existing bore hole diameter, frame condition, and the gap between the door edge and lock edge before recommending anything, so you always get a deadbolt that physically fits and functionally protects.
We install a wide range of hardware, including Schlage, Kwikset, and Mul-T-Lock models, as well as the jimmy proof deadbolt — a rim-mounted lock that interlocks with its strike plate rather than extending a bolt, making it extremely resistant to prying. Jimmy proof deadbolt installation is particularly popular on older Bernards homes where inward-swinging doors and narrow door frames make a standard mortise lock or cylindrical deadbolt difficult to retrofit cleanly. Our technicians are equally comfortable installing a mortise lock — the full-pocket lock body set into the door edge — which remains the gold standard for heavy commercial-grade exterior doors and period-appropriate historic homes throughout Somerset County.
